Star Wars Day is back with us once again!
Many of us will be greeting each other with the phrase: ‘May the Fourth be with you' as even though the holiday was not created or declared by Lucasfilm, many Star Wars fans across the world have chosen to celebrate the holiday. But have you ever wondered when and where the phrase first started?
According to StarWars.com, who cite Alan Arnold's 1980 book Once Upon a Galaxy: A Journal of the Making of The Empire Strikes Back, "May the 4th be with you" first emerged on May 4, 1979. This was when Margaret Thatcher became the first woman UK Prime Minister and to celebrate, the Tories took out a newspaper advert which declared, "May The Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations." Since then the phrase has been used by Star Wars fans across the globe and embraced by Disney, since they took over LucasFilm 2012
And whilst May 4 is associated with the Jedi phrase – May the force be with you, May 5th has also come to be known as “Revenge of the Fifth” which is a play on Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and celebrates the Dark Side or the Sith lords in the Star Wars Universe.
